Basic Photography

Basic Photography

This class focuses on sound basic photography skills. We will explore depth of field, white balance, shutter speed, camera stabilization, composition, and much much more. This is the class to take if you are just getting started with photography or are a beginner that has not managed to get the camera off auto mode. I will address issues with point and shoot cameras as well as SLRs. Bring your camera and be prepared to learn more than you thought possible in a day. For any age and skill level. (Class size limited to 15 students.)

Light Meters: How They Work and Why We Need Them

Meters, meters and more meters! Why don’t we just allow the camera decide? This class will show you why you need to have a better understanding of the light we use to capture images. We will explore in-camera metering modes as well as hand-held meters. How do we control the light if we are guessing at what is there? This and more is all part of this interesting and informative program that will start you well on your way to understanding lighting ratios.

Exploring Lightroom™ (One Day Seminar)

If you are a photographer you simply have to learn to be efficient in Lightroom. A program designed for photographers, Lightroom is simply the best solution out there for file management, efficiency and over all control of your images. This Lightroom™ class will teach you how to maximize your work flow and create a systematic approach to all your digital imagery. There are systems that have been proven effective to rapidly and succinctly process large project shoots into manageable client-based results. We’ll show you the shortcuts and methods that work.

Exploring Lightroom™ (2-day class)

If you are a photographer you simply have to learn to be efficient in Lightroom. A program that was designed from the ground up to used by photographers. This is simply the best solution out there for file management, efficiency and over all control of your images. This Lightroom™ class will teach you how to maximize your work flow and create a systematic approach to all your digital imagery. There are systems that have been proven effective to rapidly and succinctly process large project shoots into manageable client-based results. We’ll show you the shortcuts and methods that work.

HDR for Profit

Learn how to use HDR properly and expand your photographic creativity. The blending of art and technical skills has never been more important for a photographer. This program will show you how to use the skill to make money in an untapped market in your community. We will explore three major software programs capable of HDR processing: Photoshop CS6™, Photomatix™ and Nik Software HDR Pro™. We’ll analyze these programs and provide a comparison and unbiased opinion of each, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. In addition, you’ll learn about image processing and proper capture techniques.

Photoshop I (5 week class)

Photoshop classes are designed to take you well beyond image adjustment and simple color correction well into the more advanced design elements and functionality of Photoshop. You will learn advanced masking techniques and the ultimate control over your images with levels and curves. This course will progress you rapidly and logically to an advanced Photoshop user. Bring a laptop computer with Photoshop CS4, CS5, CS6 or CC to the class so that you can work along on each project. (Class size limited to 15 students.)

Photoshop Advanced Portraiture Touch-up (4 week class)

This class focuses on advanced skills needed for pro level portraiture touch up. You must come the class equipped with a solid understanding of layers, masks, and brushes. You will learn skin touch up and softening techniques, eye makeup including but not limited to color and eye enhancement. Mascara and blush as well as eye lash construction and enhancing are taught. (Class size limited to 15 students.)

Photoshop Advanced Creative (4 week class)

This class will focus on advanced creative skills including the use of images to create backgrounds and geometric shapes and structures. We will explore the world of 3D and how to create objects from the ground up. You must come the class equipped with a solid understanding of layers, masks, and brushes. This class is designed for those who want to go beyond captured images to create art using Photoshop as a medium and or minds as the palette. (Class size limited to 15 students.)

Corel Painter II

Corel Painter is the premier program for the creative artist looking to take his or her photography into a customized piece of hand painted art. You will learn to use the powerful auto paint functions available, and, more importantly you will explore your own creative genius and sense of color and depth to create truly inspiring images. Bring an open mind and free spirit for this one. (Class size limited to 15 students.)

Portraiture

Light it, Shoot it, Edit it Workshop

Exactly as it says — we will first study different lighting options with live models, then each student will have the chance to shoot the set and then, I will show you how I will edit them from beginning to end.

  • Three different classical lighting options
  • Radio controls and how to use them
  • What each light produces on the subject
  • How to use Lightroom™ tether capture and how to edit using Lightroom™ and Photoshop™

Through hands-on demonstration and live shooting, you will learn multiple lighting scenarios and why and when to use each. Depth of field options and lighting changes will be discussed. This in-depth program is not for the beginner. Although beginners may attend, you may find yourself in over your head at times. The class is designed to be pretty fast paced in order to accomplish the goals of being able to edit the images as well. No laptops are required; you will be able to follow along with the instructor’s editing of the final images.

High Speed Sync. Workshop

This program focuses on off-camera flash in High Speed Sync. Mode.

  • How to use it and when
  • What to watch for and how to overcome the problems
  • Power consumption and multiple portable units
  • Light modifiers for the portable strobe

The class will discuss and demonstrate techniques to balance your ambient light and flash source lights on subjects. Here the focus will be on using all the systems that are available in the camera to have ultimate control over depth of field using High speed sync., and when and how to use it in stop action.

Bring your cameras and flashes to this hands-on learning experience. After a short lecture and demonstration at each station, you will be shooting and learning.

Off-Camera Flash Workshop

This program focuses on off-camera flash in a variety of setups. Four hands-on stations will be set up:

  • Cable-tethered off-camera flash and effective bounce skills
  • Infrared controls built into your flash systems and multiple flashes along with ETTL controls
  • Radio controlled off-camera flash and high speed sync with radio controls. Including the new AC3 Pocket wizard controller
  • Quantum Lights in a multiple-light set-up and radio controls through the new Treo controller

The class will discuss and demonstrate techniques to balance your ambient light and flash source lights on subjects. We will discuss the advantages of radio controls over infrared and why and you may be having trouble with outdoor shoots and balancing your lights.

Bring your cameras and flashes to this hands-on learning experience. After a short lecture and demonstration at each station, you will be shooting and learning. This is one not to miss!

Natural Light Portraiture

Portraiture in natural light done correctly has an unequaled softness; however you must know light in a very intimate manner to achieve results that are truly breathtaking. The study of light and portraiture starts here. The class will cover how to control window light to your benefit, how we can modify natural light and all the particular parameters that the camera is capable of. We also begin the study of light and the relationships of light stops and how to control the dynamic range to meet the camera’s capabilities. (Class size limited to 15 students.)

Studio Lighting Basics

This class explores the realm of studio lighting with continuous light. Working with live models, you will learn to understand the relationship between light sources and how to control those lights to create beautifully dynamic images that step into the world as a true three dimensional image. Attendees are required to have working knowledge of exposure equivalents and light meters, as well as an understanding of proper custom white balance. Basic Photography class or equivalent knowledge required. (Class size limited to 8 students.)

Studio Lighting Intermediate (1 day class)

This class explores the realm of studio lighting with continuous light. Working with models, you will learn to understand the relationship between light sources and how to control those lights to create beautifully dynamic images that step into the world as a true three dimensional image. Attendees are required to have working knowledge of exposure equivalents and light meters, as well as an understanding of proper custom white balance. Basic Photography class or equivalent knowledge required. (Class size limited to 8 students.)

Studio Lighting Advanced (1 day class)

This class explores the realm of studio lighting with strobe lights. Working with live models, you will learn to understand the relationship between light sources and how to control those lights to create beautifully dynamic images that step into the world as a true three dimensional image. Attendees are required to have working knowledge of exposure equivalents and light meters, as well as understand proper custom white balance. This class further explores numerous light modifiers, their application and uses, to include grids, flags, scrims, gobos, and reflectors to name a few. You will take lighting into the fascinating with 5 - 8 light sets that have balance and beauty at its core. (Class size limited to 8 students.)

Tabletop Photography and Helicon focus Workshop

Tabletop photography is where the art of studying light begins. We will look at light in a very intimate manner — how to control it, where it goes, how to block it, reflect it and measure it. You will learn:

  • Light metering
  • Camera stabilization
  • Light sources
  • Quality of light
  • Depth field and Helicon Focus
  • Post production skills

The class will discuss and demonstrate techniques to make compound images with varying depth of fields to create full focus images in what would have been impossible ways only years ago.

Bring your camera’s macro lenses and extension tubes to this hands-on learning experience. After a short lecture and demonstration at each station, you will be shooting and learning.
